불운의 배우이자 전설의 그 분의 아들, ‘브랜든 리’ 주연의 환타지 액션물로써, 그와 그의 약혼녀를 죽였던 갱들에게 복수를 하기위해 죽음에서 되살아나와 응징을 한다는 내용이었죠. 극중 ‘에릭 드레이븐’ 역을 맡았던 브랜든은, 촬영장에서 발생한 총기사고로 참으로 어처구니 없게 세상을 떠나고 마는데요, 사고 원인은 당시 영화의 도구를 담당하던 스탶이랍니다. 보통 영화 세트장에서는 리얼리즘을 표현하기 위해 탄환은 더미(실제로 발사까지는 안되는)를 따로 구입해서 쓴다는데요, 비용을 부담하기가 싫었는지 시간에 쫒겼는지, 하여튼 아직 총기류 취급이 미숙하던 담당자가, 무려 실탄안의 화약을 본인 마음대로 제거를 하며 더미 탄환을 직접 제조하는 과정에서, 그만 화약의 일부가 안에 남겨졌었다는 겁니다…바로 그때, 테스트 중이던 총 안에서는 탄환이 총구 안을 꽉 막아버리는 일명 스큅로드 (squib load) 현상이 일어났는데, 그런데도 그걸 눈치채지 못한 얼빵한 놈이 해당 총(.44 매그넘 스미스&웨슨 모델 리볼버)을 그대로 실제 촬영현장에 넘겨 줘버리는 바람에, 막혀있던 더미 탄환이 발사가 되어 브랜든 리가 4m 거리에서 복부를 맞고 사망까지 했다는 겁니다…
참 거. 어쨌든 영화는 당시 미국에서 개봉과 동시에 당당 1위를 기록, 94년 한해 동안 전세계에서는 24번째로 수익을 올린 히트작이라 하네요. ‘롤링스톤즈’ 지등 평론가들도 의외로 점수를 후하게 줬던 기억이 나구요, 영화 속의 시종일관 어두컴컴 하면서도 축축한 배경을 바탕으로 흐르는, 당시 잘 나가던 인기 밴드들의 곡들이 아주 일품이죠. 주인공 ‘에릭 드레이븐’ 의 극 중에서 직업이 록 뮤지션이라 그런지, 앨범 전체가 그냥 거의 얼터너티브, 메탈 계열 입니다. 저는 개인적으로 영화 자체는 그저 그랬지만 (일단 주인공이 까마귀 컨셉인데 얼굴 분장이 왜 삐에로인줄 모르겠음, 그리고 일단 부활까지 한 수퍼히어로인 반면, 불사신이라는 점 이외에는 특별하다 할만한 능력이나 기술이 없어 전투신이 좀 밋밋함), 이 사운드트랙 만은 20년 이상을 반복해서 듣고 있을 정도로 좋아한답니다. 전혀 안 질린다구요.
자자, 이제 음악얘기 하죠. 먼저, 일단 당신이 90년대 하드록 팬이라면 무조건 필청 앨범이라고 자신있게 추천 드립니다.
글쎄 수록곡 리스트 좀 보시라니까요? 더 큐어, 롤린스 밴드, 레이지 어겐스트 더 머신, 헬멧, 판테라, 스톤 템플 파일럿츠…헉헉. 초호화 그 자체! 폭력이 난무하여 어지럽기만한 영화의 대미를 침착하게 마무리 해주는 맨 마지막곡만 발라드 곡 이구요, 나머지는 죄다 피가 끓고 두 주먹을 불끈 쥘 만한, 그런 열혈 얼터너티브 곡 들입니다. 더 지저스 앤 매리 체인, 메디신 등, 특히 한국에서의 지명도는 별로 없을 법한 밴드들의 곡들도 참 괜찮습니다. 음악을 들으며 이런 마이너 밴드들 중에서 보석들을 발견하는 재미도 무시 못하죠.
풀 앨범 한 번 정주행 해보셈. 그냥 무조건 틀어놓고 뭐 일을 하시던지 요리를 하시던지 하셈.

특히나 당시 정규 스튜디오 앨범에는 수록되지 않았었다고 알고 있는 5번, 9번 트랙과, 이 영화의 모든 것을 한 곡으로 함축시켜 표현하는 1번 트랙이야 말로, 이 사운드트랙의 백미 라고 하겠습니다.

Natural Born Killers
Youth + violence. This combination somehow feels natural, but it also sounds incredibly dangerous. Along with Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ followed by ‘True Romance’ (starring Christian Slater), and ‘California’ (featuring Brad Pitt), this film also depicts the madness of youth breaking free from the monotony of everyday life. Just what could possibly be more dangerous than a murderous couple who believe that nothing in this world guarantees tomorrow?
While the overwhelming violence permeates the film, the soundtrack showcases a remarkable versatility, ranging from hard rock to even Third World music. In the actual film, a total of 75 tracks are played at perfectly timed moments that suit each scene, yet it is a bit disappointing that only 27 tracks are included finally in the soundtrack.
The first track of this album kindly guides you, puzzled as you are, into the madness of serial murder. Hail Leonard Cohen’s ‘Waiting for the Miracle’, beginning with his signature deep voice, also soothingly whispering as if something monumental is about to happen, almost sinisterly. Ironically, that calmness is delivered to heighten the listener’s tension. From the next track onward, things will be set loose so brace yourselves…
Now the bloody party begins! Among the fierce female punk bands of the time, you simply can’t leave out the infamous L7. Just check this eerie track called ‘Shitlist’. If you dare to hesitate or act timidly in front of these alarming women, then you’ll find yourself added to this list. And no, we are never responsible for that!
Just from the title alone, you can immediately sense the sheer boldness of this song, overflowing with controversy. This song is just truly & dangerously provocative, I guarantee. The artist, Patti Smith, is such a legendary figure in the world of female punk. While the genre may differ, Korea’s Han Young-Ae is on par with her.
Anyway, for those who feel a bit tired of today’s never-ending clamor for gender equality and diversity, or openly admit to having antisocial tendencies, this track is an absolute must-listen.
The album is produced by Trent Reznor. As always, his icy cold as lyrics accompanied by heartless beats and the relentless mechanical noises offer no warmth at all, just to become this one big nail that will painfully stab into the listener’s heart. Yes, I clearly remember experiencing the end of the century with the emergence of Nine Inch Nails too.
All of a sudden, it’s pure 100% gangster hip-hop time. Although I’ve never been to the back alleys of LA mentioned in the lyrics, having listened to this track, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what that place might be like. By the time I finish listening, I can’t help but wonder how to apply for a ‘Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers’ for personal safety, considering the vibe of the song.
This is the song sung almost as a monologue by Juliette Lewis, who plays the wild protagonist girl (She is indeed the one who argues that there’s no need to for women to shave their armpits) in the movie. She justifies herself by saying, ‘I was born this way, so there’s nothing I can do about my killing spree.’ Well, you might say she has a mischievous and quite cute face, but on the other hand, she also possesses a face that is chillingly brutal. Every time I listen to this song, it reminds me of the gory atmosphere of the movie.
So, everyone, this movie is definitely a love story, ok? It’s just that the couple is severely deranged, that’s all. I mean you can still find some romantic scenes scattered throughout the film. Especially when they commit a series of murders while gazing up at the starry night sky and whispering sweet nothings to each other. Don’t forget there are certainly sweet songs listed that I didn’t get a chance to mention earlier.
Personally, I was able to learn a lot about the genre ‘industrial’ through the band ‘Lard,’ which appears on this album. I discovered that it’s possible to enjoy new music without prejudice based solely on feelings, whether it’s not just major Western music or music not in English. If you’re someone who has been dreaming of a crazy escape from the repetitive routines of everyday life, or someone who feels oppressed by something, or someone who has no objection to the fusion of various genres, I confidently recommend this album.
Last Action Hero
90年代のロックシーンと言えば、あなたは先ず何が思い浮かびますか？そうです、そりゃ「グランジ」でしょう。90年代はX世代の絶大な支持のもとに、このグランジという新世代が、80年代に新人として次々と登場していた（今ではほとんど伝説となっている）スラッシュメタルと共に、最高潮に達していた時期でもありましたね。当時は、本当にこの二つのジャンルがバランスよく両方とも人気が高く、競争によってお互いが発展していて、我々ファンにとっては質の高いアルバムたちに毎日触れていた、幸せな思い出が蘇ります。
ということで、今から僕がご紹介させて頂こうと思っているこのアルバムこそが、まさにその時代を代表すると自信を持って申し上げます。映画自体は正直、大失望しましたね。 いや、だから、あのアーノルド・シュワルツェネッガーが主演なのに。。。
映画が何と言いますか、集中できません。特に派手なアクションが見られるわけでもないですし。
言うまでもないこのラインナップ！特定ジャンルへの偏見がまったく感じられないという点も、凄く気に入っています。信じて聴いていただいても大丈夫ですって。
当時のスラッシュメタルバンドとしては珍しく、DJのスクラッチサウンドを取り入れたアンスラックスの「Poison My Eyes」と、壮大なライブ感がそのまま伝わってくるエアロスミスの「Dream On」も、とても新鮮に感じられましたね。
僕にこのサウンドトラックを買わせた、まさに“問題の曲”です。映画が終わり、エンドロールが上がると共に流れたときの衝撃とあの嬉しさ！さすが“オーストラリアの誇り”と言えるでしょう。典型的な8ビートサウンドに、味わい深いギターリフが絶品である曲なのです。
かつて一世を風靡したシアトル・サウンドを代表するバンドの一つ、アリス・イン・チェインズは、なんと2曲も参加！独特のねじれたギターリフ、陰鬱な雰囲気、そしてボーカルの怒りは、今なお健在です。
そのほかにも、心の中でくすぶっていた怒りを抑えきれない様子を描いたMegadethの「Angry Again」、プログレッシブというジャンルの頂点を極めたQueensrÿcheの「Real World」、そしてあまり知られてはいないものの、単調なメロディの繰り返しがなぜか魅力的なFishboneの「Swim」といった楽曲にも、ぜひ注目していただきたいところです。
